Chinese smartphone maker Huawei launched several smartphones in India under its main brand name in the past couple of years. However, in the recent years the company started facing a stiff competition from the new Chinese entrants in India like Xiaomi, MEIZU, vivo, and others. The brand started losing its market share to these vendors. To strengthen its foothold against other vendors, the brand launched its sub-brand called Honor in the country. The brand launched several feature-loaded Honor devices in India with competitive price tags. However, the company still unveils new smartphones under its main Huawei brand from time to time. The Huawei Mate 8 is the latest device from the company in the phablet segment that was unveiled in November 2015.

Design of the Huawei Mate 8 hasn’t much changed since the Mate 7. It is one of the best looking smartphones in the mid-range at the moment. The device offers a premium metal design that gives an ergonomic feel. The device gets small bezels around the display, measures 7.9mm around the waist, and tips the scale at 185 grams. The Honor 7 also offers a premium metal design, measures 8.5mm around the waist, and weighs in at 157 grams. Overall, design-wise, the Mate 8 and Honor 7, both offer impressive and attractive build quality.
Display and OS
Talking about the display, the Huawei Mate 8 is for those who like large devices. The phone offers a phablet-grade 6-inch display that bears a full HD resolution screen panel. The device sports a pixel density of 367 pixels per inch. The Honor 7 on the other hand sports a compact 5.2-inch full HD display, and offers a higher pixel density of 424ppi than the Mate 8. The Honor 7 produces higher colours than the Mate 8, but the latter offers better media viewing experience thanks to a bigger display. On the software-front, the Honor 7 runs Android Lollipop with EMUI 3.1 on top, and will be getting the Marshmallow update sometime in the future. The Mate 8 on the other hand offers the latest Android Marshmallow OS out of the box. So software-wise, the Mate 8 offers better features than the Honor 7.
Coming to the configuration, the Huawei Mate 8 utilises a HiSilicon Kirin 950 SoC that has four Cortex-A53 cores spinning at 1.8GHz and four Cortex-A72 clusters running at 2.3GHz. The phone comes in two variants – one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM and the other with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The Honor 7 on the other hand offers slightly less powerful HiSiliconKirin 935 processor, aided by 3GB of RAM. The storage capacity on board is 16GB, which can be further increased by inserting a microSD card. Overall, the Mate 8 clearly offers better performance than the Honor 7.
The Huawei Mate 8 offers sports a 16MP primary snapper with autofocus, a dual-colour LED flash, a CMOS image sensor, optical image stabilisition, and 1080p recording. The Honor 7 on the other hand gets a better 20-megapixel primary snapper with autofocus, a dual-tone LED flash, full HD recording and an Exmor-RS CMOS sensor. For selfies, they both offer 8-megapixel secondary snappers. Overall, the Honor 7 offers better specs than the Mate 8.
Connectivity and battery
In terms of connectivity features, the Huawei Mate 8 and Honor 7 both offer similar features. They come with dual-SIM slots, 4G LTE, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, USB on the go, micro-USB 2.0 and A-GPS. The Honor 7 is fuelled by a 3,100mAh battery. Since the Mate 8 is a quite large offering, it gets a beefier 4,000mAh battery.
The Huawei Mate 8 is the latest flagship offering from the Chinese vendor that comes with a massive 6-inch display, a powerful processor, excellent configuration, great camera features, and a beefy battery. If you have large hands and like huge devices, the Mate 8 is for you. The Honor 7 on the other hand is a compact device that comes with an excellent display, decent configuration, excellent camera specifications, and offers decent battery life. Talking about the prices, the Honor 7 is available in the country for Rs 22,999. The Huawei Mate 8 on the other hand comes with a hefty price tag of around Rs 45,000, since it packs premium features. The Honor 7 is available to buy right away in the country, but the Mate 8 hasn’t been made available here yet.
